Vegard Bjørsmo
Vegard Bjørsmo (25) from Karasjok is a Sámi artist. He first gained national recognition at the age of 19 through NRK’s Stjernekamp, and has since established himself as both a musical theatre performer and recording artist under the name VEGARD. He is an Emmy-nominated co-creator of the NRK drama series Oro jaska, for which he also co-composed the music and played one of the leading roles. Now he will be working with us at Elle Sofe Company as the new Oaván trainee, financed through Talent Norge and Samfunnsløftet.
Over the past years, I have worked primarily as a freelance artist, moving between music, acting and performing arts. It has given me the opportunity to explore many different ways of telling stories, but it has also made me increasingly aware of what I want to contribute to as an artist: creating and taking part in Sámi and Sámi-language work, and helping build spaces where our stories, languages and ways of seeing the world can exist on their own terms. That is a big part of what makes joining Elle Sofe Company feel so meaningful to me.
I have followed Elle Sofe’s work for a long time, and have been deeply inspired by the way she brings Sámi culture, physicality, language and contemporary artistic expression together. There is something very powerful in the way the work can be deeply rooted in Sápmi while at the same time reaching far beyond it. It does not ask Sámi culture to become something else in order to be understood. Instead, it invites people in.
Through my work as a freelancer, I have often experienced the freedom that comes with creating my own projects. At the same time, I have felt an increasing desire to be part of something larger that also pushes in a capacity bigger than myself.
I want to learn from people with different experiences and skills, contribute to a strong artistic environment, and gain a deeper understanding of how a Sámi company can grow and develop while staying rooted in its own place and community.
There is also something special about joining a company whose work reaches across borders. Sámi culture is local to me, but it is also part of a much larger Indigenous context. I have experienced how powerful it can be to meet audiences and artists from other places and recognize something familiar in each other’s stories. I am particularly looking forward to learning from the people around me. Elle Sofe Company is a relatively small team with ambitions that reach far beyond its size, and I find that combination inspiring.
I hope to contribute with what I already know, while remaining open to how much I still have to learn. In the company I look forward to pushing myself in a combination of artistic and administrative work. Contributing artistically to productions and projects, while also working with company operations, social media and communication. I have always enjoyed the creative process, but I am equally curious about everything that makes the creative work possible in a company like this, the people, structures, communication, planning and countless small decisions behind a production.
I feel very grateful for the opportunity to become part of Elle Sofe Company, and excited about what lies ahead. Contributing to the company’s continued growth, meeting new collaborators and audiences, and being part of creating work that can move between Sápmi and the world.
