Áisaroaivi

In this short performance we worked with dancing directly in the land—moving in the winter cold, listening to the quiet and the wind, and letting the tundra shape our bodies. The work explores the intricate melodies of yoik and the subtle nuances that appear through the shifting light, the rhythm of the day, and the pulse of the landscape.

At its core, the performance is an exploration of dancing to yoik. We focused on rhythm, the body, and the sensation of time—how yoik stretches and compresses movement, how it invites stillness, and how it carries memory.

Traditional Sámi yoik and contemporary dance meet on the Áisaroaivi tundra, in the expanse between Alta and Hammerfest. Here, in this open plateau, the meeting between voice, body, and land becomes both intimate and vast. The tundra itself becomes part of the choreography: a collaborator of wind, snow, breath, and sound.
